The Institute of Adult Education (IAE) is a social service institution for training; open and distance education research and consultancy in Adult education and Lifelong Learning. it started in 1960 as a section of extra- mural studies department of Malterere University College under University of London. in 1963 it became a unit ofthe department of education of Dar es Salaam University College and elevated to an autonomous institution under parliamentary Act No. i2 in 1975. it has six departments: Adult and Continuing Education Studies, Mass Education and Gender Development, Regional Center Coordination, Distance Education, Human Resources and Finance.

Its vision is to be a centre of excellence that maintains learning and informed society. The IAE mission is to design, develop and implement quality training and adult continuing education to equip people with enabling ltnowledge and skills necessary for sustainable development and dealing with global challenges. its core activities and business include implementing adult and non-formal education policies; capacity building for teachers and administrators of adult and non-formal education; providing education and training through open and distance learning; mass education and women development programmes; research and pu biications. The IAE services extends to the grassroots level through regional centres network established in each of the 21 regions of Tanzania Mainland.
